Streetcar is a pay-as-you-go car club. It has opened up a new niche in the car hire market thanks to the technology which monitors and interacts with the vehicle, its driver and car club's control center. Streetcar can track a vehicle's exact location. It can open the vehicle's doors allowing people into the car, or prevent them leaving it by locking the doors. The vehicle is also fitted with an engine immobiliser, preventing the car being moved. The heart of the Streetcar system is a handheld computer located in the glove compartment of the vehicle. It uses a global system for a mobile communications (GSM) radio link with the user and car club base of operations. The system monitors all aspects of the booking transaction, recording all driving times as well as distances and the vehicle's position. Rather like air traffic controllers, the operations team know where all their cars are, what speed they are doing and what time they are due to return to their base parking space.
