Human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSC) can be readily isolated from adult bone marrow, proliferate rapidly, and differentiate into various tissues, making them an ideal source for tissue regeneration. The key to engineering three-dimensional (3-D) constructs from hMSC requires precise spatial and temporal control of growth factors, as well as mechanical and physiological stimuli, where bio-reactor systems are indispensable tools. This article describes our efforts to develop an in-house perfusion bioreactor system and highlights its potential for tissue regeneration from hMSC.
