MATERIAL handling is the movement, protection, storage and control of materials and products throughout the process of their manufacture and distribution, consumption and disposal. Human body itself as a material needs its handling and transportation which multiply with the number of people getting involved together. Besides, materials make an important segment of our daily life in one or the other form and have to be made available from their resources for their different uses. Thus, materials handling has a very important role to play. Material handling in small quantities with sufficient risk is being performed to a large extent by human beings themselves but with the development of technology and changing attitude of people towards complacency, role of technology is growing for materials handling in general and for bulk in particular is growing very fast. Consumer demand through the years has shaped the materials handling industry, affecting everything from the types of technology devices are put together and adjusted. The technology involved provides fast, efficient and safe means for materials handling. Different technologies like storage & handling; casters; conveyors; pallets; lift trucks; batteries are already in use for the centuries and are further being developed with time fulfilling the general and specific needs of people in materials handling.
