With the aid of examples, it is shown what influence residual elements, i.e. elements present in small concentrations in the steel as the result of particular processes, have on the properties of engineering steels. In principle, residual elements act like alloying elements. As there are frequently interactions between residual and alloying elements, universally valid relations can be derived only to a limited extent. Any restriction of residual element concentrations must be decided upon for eachindividual case in relation to the application involved and examined for its necessity, advisability and cost.
