On June 23, a Japanese adventurer named Mitsuro Oba became the first human being ever to complete a solo walk across the frozen Arctic Ocean. It took the 44-year-old Japanese 121 days to cover the 1,850-kilometer distance from Russia's Komsomolets Island to Canada's Ellesmere Island — on foot and by ski. A British team, equipped with dog sleds, had crossed the Arctic in 1969, followed by an international team in 1989 and a South Korean team in 1995, also on foot and by ski. Oba, however,is the first man to have accomplished the feat alone.
