摘要

Clams closed: Commercial shellfish harvesting was closed Oct. 14 by Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) on a significant portion of British Columbia's central coast after the sinking of an American tug with a significant diesel spill. The sinking of the tug and delayed response to the subsequent fuel spill has renewed calls for better oil spill response on B.C.'s coast. It took 20 hours for cleanup crews to arrive on the scene. The 91-foot Nathan E. Stewart, owned by Kirby Offshore Marine, was pushing a 293-foot empty fuel barge when it ran aground shortly after midnight Oct. 13 on Edge Reef in Seaforth Channel near Athlone Island.
