"Crab fishing today is pretty much a race out of the gate," says Jim Baldwin, the parts manager for Mor-Jon in Crescent City, California, "which means their hydraulics have to be more efficient." The 25-year veteran hydraulics master says matching the hydraulics to the crab block--or longline puller, or other deck machinery--is a matter of mastering the laws of numbers. Every crab block requires a certain gallonage to run, says Baldwin, and he considers the size of the block andthe engine or auxiliary available to run the hydraulics. Then he runs the numbers. "We try to match the engine rpm with the cubic-inch displacement to get the designated gallons [the block] needs," he says. Surprisingly, a lot of boats are the same, he says, but some captains want to fish at certain engine speeds, in which case he tries to match the gallonage to the crab block and the desired rpm.
