In PRINCE WILLIAM SOUND, purse seiners scored a record pink salmon catch. As of Aug. 25, the 100-boat fleet had bagged just over 60 million pinks and had a shot at reaching 62 million by season's end, said Bert Lewis, seine manager for the Departmentof Fish and Game in Cordova. The old record was 59.9 million in 2005. Despite the huge volume, processors and managers didn't need to resort to roe stripping, Lewis said. About three-quarters of the pinks were hatchery fish. The price was 16 cents a pound, a penny off last year's average. Historically, pink salmon were canned, but a trend toward more frozen production has improved pink value in recent years, industry players say.
