Winters slow to ease its grip and pollock fleet emerges

Slow pollock: As June wrapped up in Unalaska, the mountains were still capped with snow and the hills lacked their usual summer greenness. Ferns were just unfurling, and the lupines were only really starting to bloom. A vicious winter meant everythingwas a little slow to arrive. Including the pollock, it seems. Two weeks into B season, the fleet had caught a little over 100,000 metric tons of its 720,000-metric-ton allocation. Fishermen were moving at a slightly faster pace than last year, but theywould have preferred an even more auspicious start. They want to avoid a repeat of 2011, when a mix of slow fishing and salmon bycatch troubles left the fleet struggling to take their full quota by the season's close.
