No matter how it is viewed, IBM is a giant. With 426,000 employees, operations in 170 countries, and more than 34,000 active patents, IBM grossed $107 billion in revenue in 2011 and was named by Fortune as the top company for global leaders. Founded in 1911 through the combination of three small technology companies by financier Charles Flint as Computing-Tabulating-Recording Company, the company hired Thomas Watson in 1914 who, a decade later, changed the name to International Business Machines. Employing Watson's simple but profound motto of "Think", IBM has been at the forefront of the technology revolution as recently illustrated by its nearly human Watson computer system. Designed to process unstructured data and interpret natural language, Watson can process the language of a clue, register the intent of a question, scour millions of lines of human language, and return a single, precise answer—in less than three seconds. Watson recently beat a host of former game show champions on Jeopardy including all-time money winner Ken Jennings, clearly demonstrating its ability to out-think even very bright people.
