Rethinking Humanity in the Anthropocene: The Long View of Humans and Nature

On February 17, 2013 more than 40,000 people gathered at the Washington Monument just blocks from the White House to persuade President Obama to cancel building the rest of the Keystone XL pipeline that will carry natural gas from Canada and the northern U.S. to Texas. But what many really wanted to communicate was that rejection of this pipeline is the most visible way in which the United States could indicate that it is committed to decreasing carbon emissions and beginning to curb global warming.The permission to build allows business as usual, even if it means superheating the planet.
