Whether athletes use a ball or puck, wield a stick, bat, or racket, or rely on their arms or legs to score goals, touchdowns, or home runs, there is no denying that professional athletes and the teams they represent are idolized and watched—on and off the field—by young and old, men and women alike. Athletes and their clubs, leagues, and professional sports organizations are role models, and their behavior and interactions with fans and host communities can send a strong message about the importance of protecting the environment, improving opportunities for children, and caring for those less fortunate.
