As 2008 drew to a close, Sens. John Kerry (D-Mass.), Olympia Snowe (R-Maine) and Charles Schumer (D-N.Y) upped their pressure on Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson to set aside a portion of the economic bailout package to help small businesses.Specifically, the senators asked the Treasury to purchase government-backed small business loans. The move, they said, was needed to provide immediate relief to small businesses shut out of the credit market because of the paralyzed system.
