Cancer pain--progress and ongoing issues in the United States.

Unrelieved pain affects the lives of millions of cancer patients worldwide, and is associated with unnecessary suffering and huge societal costs. Despite extensive efforts and advances in therapeutic options, education and public health policy, the literature continues to report high prevalence and undertreatment of cancer pain (1,2), with figures that have been essentially unchanged for decades.
