The major limitation of the present study is the small size of the SRED group. Due to this limitation, some comparisons (e.g., depression scores) may have lacked power to find a significant difference. Despite the large recruitment of patients with parasomnias in the university hospital, only 21 patients with a primary SRED diagnosis, among 6397 in-patients with various sleep disorders, were identified. This small number suggests that the prevalence of SRED is overestimated by epidemiology criteria, overlooked by referrals, or that only a limited number of patients (possibly the most severe, as routinely apparent in adult sleepwalkers) seek medical advice in a sleep centre. The current diagnosis criteria included an altered level of consciousness during at least some of the nocturnal eating events. This criterion may be restrictive, as it is optional and not mandatory in the present international diagnosis criteria of SRED. However, there is currently debate over making this criterion mandatory to provide a more homogeneous definition of the disorder and to more clearly separate SRED from other eating habits during the night [10,18]. In this regard, the current sample, despite the small size, was homogeneous. In addition, the completion of interviews and questionnaires in two controlled groups allowed for the control of several measures that were previously not controlled.
