Improved packaging system of hot rolled coils at Rourkela Steel Plant

Packaging is more than just product's pretty face. Packaging considerations for hot rolled (HR) coils include size, weight, labeling, binding, ability to stack (handling), unitizing and securing. Various packaging consideration purpose defined as: 'Primary' or 'Sales' packaging is packaging which forms a sales unit for the user or final consumer, 'Secondary' or 'Grouped' packaging is that which contains a number of sales units, 'Tertiary' or 'Transport' packaging is packaging that is used to group secondary packaging together. Packaging of HR coils is not only a complex task but involves many discrete steps starting from the production up to dispatch due to its criticality and nature of the product itself. There is always a possibility of damage of products as well as the packages as it is to be multi-handled before it is shipped to the final customer. This paper describes improved packaging system of packaging at Hot Strip Mill (HSM) of Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP), India. The paper also discusses two special cases of packaging for two customers: LPG-grade coil packaging for Confidence Petroleum Ltd and tertiary or transport packaging for Chandigarh Industrial & Tourism Development Corporation.
