In order to account for the plastic surface deformation occurring in cold rolling, a novel, 3-D Stribeck curve is proposed. This curve is characterized by three 'anchor points', which represent surface chemistry and two aspects of lubricant rheology. Each anchor point can be measured in the laborato-ry but requires well-defined conditions, while a separate strategy is proposed for assessing ep/aw performance. Two operational numbers define the lubrication regime. They represent film formation in the inlet zone and in-bite film formation facilitated by plastic surface deformation. The ideas behind the 3-D Stribeck curve are used in a more targeted lubricant development.
