Derek Jarman (1942—1994), when he is remembered, is remembered as a film-maker, and secondarily, a gay activist. His films, including Jubilee (1978), Caravaggio (1986), Edward II (1991) and Blue (1993), were not made within the commercial film-studiosystem (which he came to hate). He was introduced to film as a serious artistic pursuit when he was an art student by a film studies course at the Slade School of Fine Art. The introduction was thus not to mainstream commercial cinema. Yet Jarman disliked being classified as a special interest or art film director. From the 1950s until his death he was also a painter, making, among many other paintings, various series: a series of landscapes (1967), the Avebury series (1973) the Black and Broken Glassseries (1980—1987), the Caravaggio Suite (1986), the GBH series (1984), the Queer series (1992) and the Evil Queen series (1993). Ironically, perhaps, film eventually took him away from being a painter by squeezing his available time.1
