A deep sense of alterity in the experience of gardens is a common theme in the essays in this volume. In some cases the dialogue is between public and private meanings. In others between cognition and sensation or between figurative and rhetorical language. Sometimes there is a tension between affective and denotative meanings: between the 'consumer's' interpretation and the designer's intention.
