Increased Productivity when Pressing Carbide Indexable Inserts with Finished Outer Edges

Five years ago, as Fette first entered the carbide market with hydraulic presses, such hydraulic presses were generally considered to be slow. A significant increase in yield was, however, achieved even as the Fette MP120 was first introduced, in asso-ciation with the RAG 2000 automa-tion system from Roboworker for the pressing cell. The yield of 17 parts/minute achieved by this press was also reached on mechanical presses. The crucial difference is that the 17 indexable inserts manufactured on the Fette pressing cell are preci-sion inserts with finished outer edges. In addition, quality data relat-ing to the pressing force actually used and the weight of the part is logged for each of the 17 parts pro-duced per minute. There were many factors that con-tributed to this pleasingly high yield and to the remarkable quality. The heart of the matter, then as now, is the extremely precise Controller and the matched hydraulics. The Controller permits high speeds, yet maintains a highly accurate position-ing of the upper punch. A further factor is the operating Computer; it records the production data for each individual pressed part in real-time and, co-operating with the machine Computer, triggers adjustment of the regulation when evaluation indicates that this is necessary.
