Formation of a Slag Coating on the Converter Lining

The application of a slag coating to the working surface of a converter lining is studied, with discussion of the means by which the protective layer is formed. A method is developed for assessing how effectively additives change the physicochemical properties of converter slag. Laboratory research gives rise to a magnesia modifier capable of changing the properties of the final converter slag so as to create a stable coating on the lining's working surface. A batch of magnesia modifiers produced by a patented technology is subjected to industrial testing.
