The invention relates to ferrous metallurgy in particular to a method for preparing slag for the application of the skull coating on the converter lining. The method comprises the final slag remaining of the previous melting, its modifications with additives of magnesium-containing materials, which contain in their composition the insoluble and soluble components, and application at the converter lining of the skull coating by slag blowing with nitrogen, at that the insoluble and soluble components in the magnesium-containing materials taken in the amount which provides their following ratio (0.65-0.35):(0.35-0.65), respectively, at that not less than 80 wt. % of the total quantity of hardly soluble components are taken in 2- fraction. When the final slag contains 17-20 wt. % of FeO, coal is added to the composition simultaneously with magnesium-containing materials in the quantity of 0.25-0.75 kg/t of the steel, after which shaking of converter is carried out. The present invention provides increased durability and mechanical strength of the skull coating on the converter lining, its high adhesion to the surface of the refractory lining.
