摘要

The scientific significance of bioceramics only came into the public eye in the 1960s. At tre-mendous pace, researchers then approached this field of study from many directions. Materials science has played a very prominent role in the related developments so that the re-archers and developers involved can look back on their endeavours (and in some cases their achievements) with justified pride. The European market for biomaterials and prostheses, etc. was already valued at EUR 3 billion last year, but that is just the beginning. Many ceramists have come across these materials in specialist publications or at conferences, but in most cases their knowledge just scratches the surface. We should like to present our readers with a practice-oriented insight into the fascinating opportunities on the horizon.
