Organic fibres touch our lives each day; from the food we eat, to the products used in our homes - from medianes and Vitamins, to innovative ceramics. J. Rettenmaier & Sohne is committed to the development and production of fibres from natural, renewable raw materials for industrial and life science applications. One of the company's latest innovations is the usage of its cellulose particles in the wide field of ceramic production. This article shows the function of these particles as natural pore creators. In this study, differences of the cellulose particles are analysed regarding size, structure and raw material. Cellulose particles with different structures (fibrous, granular, and spherical) are used in the size range 15-300 μm. Raw materials are cellulose pulp and chemically-modified microcrystalline cellulose. By changing these Parameters the influence on pore structure, size and volume respectively was studied. An alginate-modified gel casting process developed by the Advanced Ceramics Department of the University of Bremen/DE was used to produce the ceramic parts. Target of the study was to identify the advantages of cellulose templates in the production of ceramic catalysts carriers and filter elements.
