Steps in field and storage can reduce spread of fungus. Silver scurf, which is caused by the fungus Helminthosporium solani, reduces the quality and the weight of potatoes. The fungus spreads easily in storage and results in blemished tubers that release spores that populate on nearby tubers if disturbed. Secondary infections, such as fusarium dry rot, also can develop in the presence of silver scurf. Silver scurf is found in every potato-producing region, but recent research into the fungus is expanding the tools that growers can use to control the disease.
