It's always frustrating when a favorite tool fails to function as it should. Bad things can also happen when a good tool is misused. So it is with herbicide resistance and the application of glyphosate where it doesn't belong. Here's a look at some recent weed research related to both topics. Potato growers have relied on two herbicides — metribuzin and rimsulfuron — for nearly all post-emergence chemical control of broadleaf weeds. Unfortunately, "both of those herbicide families are prone to having weeds develop resistance to them," said Rick Boydston, agronomist with the USDAs Agricultural Research Service in Prosser, Wash.
