US business is very dull. There has been no notable basis price erosion at mill level but a great deal of competition between distributors has caused further negative pressure on resale values. Far East importers are struggling to sell to East Coast customers because of long delivery lead times and increasing price uncertainty. All the Japanese steelmakers have kept prices at the same level as in the previous month. In depressed market conditions, they hope to be able to maintain prices by cutting production, particularly to the distribution sector. Supply to end-users such as auto and electrical appliance manufacturers remains good but it is the low season in the general market. Conditions are expected to improve in July/September when stocks are better adjusted.
