There has been no notable basis price erosion at mill level in the US, although alloy surcharges for the ferritic grades and type 304 are up by between 30 US dollars and 50 US dollars per tonne. Business is very patchy, especially for the distributors. Stockists are quoting quite aggressively to try to adjust their overbuilt inventories. Import volumes are growing. In Japan, demand is still firm from major end-users such as auto and shipbuilders, whereas the distribution market, which mainly serves the construction sector, is suffering from low activity. Since the mills cut their supply to wholesalers, stocks have decreased but not enough. Consequently, prices are under negative pressure, particularly for the 300 series. Demand and inventories of type 430/409 are more balanced. Price reductions have occurred on all grades.
