Part 1 one of the paper analysed the current possibilities of automating the ceramic tile manufacturing process stages, describing the different measurement systems and the state of the art in each case. The advantages and disadvantages of the proposed control systems are analysed, highlighting the features that could help outline the 'production plant of the future'. The last part of the paper presents the results of a recently developed automatic control system of porcelain tile bulk density. The second part of this paper will analyse in some detail a practical recent example of automatic control of product variables. The case study deals with the automatic bulk density control of the porcelain tile body when the compact is ejected from the press. In order to achieve this objective it has been necessary to complete each of the following phases: posing the problem, understanding the process, selecting the appropriate instrumentation, verifying the efficiency of the chosen instrumentation, and implementing and validating the control system on an industrial scale.
