摘要

Bureau of Indian Standards organized a Seminar on WTO-TBT Agreement -- Role of Indian Stakeholders and Expectations from WTO-TBT Enquiry Point on 9 May 2005 at BIS Auditorium, Manak Bhavan, New Delhi. The seminar was inaugurated by Shri L. Mansingh, Secretary, Department of Consumer Affairs. Shri Gopal K. Pillai, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Commerce, Shri Prabir Sengupta, DG, Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT), Smt Jayshree Gupta, Joint Secretary, Department of Consumer Affairs, Shri Shiban Raina, Director General, NCCBM, Smt Satwant Reddy, Director General, BIS and Shri A. C. Pandey, Additional Director General, BIS were the other dignitaries present during the seminar besides representatives from various regulatory bodies, Export Promotion Councils, Industry Associations, related ministries and eminent experts working in this field. Shri L. Mansingh while inaugurating the seminar briefly summarized the points which according to him are relevant from the national point of view. According to him, since the inception of WTO India has not played a proactive role with respect to TBT Notifications which are affecting our exports, domestic manufacturer and Indian consumers. So far only 109 Indian Standards are mandatory in the country and according to him, unless this figure rises, it would not be possible to restrict the import. Indian markets have become vulnerable to a flood of inferior imported goods which affect the health and safety of common consumer.
