The quest for `iron units' to feed electric arc furnaces with virginiron in order to dilute impurities present in scrap charges, has lead ro a wholehost of technologies designed to make virgin iron from ore while avoiding thehigh capital costs and environmental control measures of the conventional blastfurnace. A two day symposium organised by the US Iron & SteelSociety and held in Trinidad addressed current developments.
