In early 1953, with not much more than desire, Alan W. Layton left a position with the Bureau of Reclamation and used his retirement savings to start his own construction company. From its inauspicious beginnings, the company continued to grow, finding its most success in school construction and commercial business facilities. Layton included his family in the business, teaching his boys construction from a young age at the handle of a broom and shovel. Alan W. Layton's management maxim was to "employ wonderful, dedicated, loyal people who were allowed to get involved in making major decisions, and along with the leadership, grow and develop their abilities." The results have been clear as many Layton employees retire after decades of service to the company.
