摘要

Worries about global warming and an unhealthy dependency on foreign oil have brought a rash of recent converts to the quest for sustainable energy alternatives. Yet, for more than a quarter-century, the National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA) and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) have been at the forefront, pioneering eco-friendly energy sources such as solar and wind, developing groundbreaking training programs and systems that are models of success - and proving how cost-effective they can be. In 1983, NECA and IBEW, through their National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC), launched what was among the industry's first instruction programs in the design and installation of photovoltaic (PV) systems. The following year, members of IBEW Local 26 in Washington, DC, were at work on Georgetown University's Intercultural Center, featuring a 337-kilowatt roof-integrated solar system. At its completion in 1984, it was the world's largest rooftop solar electric system fully integrated with construction - a unique distinction it would hold for more than a decade.
