Sometime in 1928, geographer William Chambers visited the Saner-Ragley Lumber Co. mill community of Carmona in Polk County and found a pall of doom hanging over the town. As at many mill towns before Carmona, and despite all efforts to continue operations, "cut-out" loomed on the horizon. Chambers wrote, "When the original (10,000 acre) forest holding was cut over, the purchase of additional stumpage perpetuated the life of the industry. But the timber reserve is again nearing exhaustion, being estimated as sufficient only for eight month's continuous operation."
