Employers are required to verify that every employee they hire is legally authorized to work in the U.S. The Dept. of Homeland Security (DHS) imposes this requirement on employers to protect jobs for those who are legally entitled to work. You shouldcomplete and keep on file a Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification Form, for every individual hired after November 6, 1986. The employee completes and signs the top portion of the one-page form. Each employee must show you documents proving his or her identity and work eligibility. A driver's license may prove identity, for example, and a Social Security card may prove work eligibility. A list of other acceptable documents is provided on the back of Form I-9.
