Palms are an integral part of landscapes in the subtropics and tropics. Their foliage adds to an exotic atmosphere while some have interesting trunks or brightly colored fruit. In many urban areas, the average yard is shrinking in size, so many of thepalms commonly used eventually will get too large and out of scale for these smaller yards. Currently, palms such as the Christmas palm (Adonidia merillii) and the pygmy date palm (Phoenix roe-belenii) are often used for more compact spaces. Consider using these alternatives for diversity in landscapes.
