Phalan et al. suggest that intensive monoculture is the only way forward for oil-palm expansion and argue that such agricultural intensification will spare intact forest elsewhere. Although we agree that intact forest should be protected for biodiversity conservation, we are not convinced that this is the only silver bullet strategy.We believe conservationists should consider a diverse portfolio of approaches rather than a single strategy (e.g., Palmer et al. 2004).
