Remembering Samuel Yellin

This is a small view in the understanding of this man. When I visit the sites of Yellin's work it is always a rich experience, whether it be the Washington Cathedral, the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, Yale University, or just a small grille on some building. Each return visit to the Yellin iron expands this view. The same tradition of this fine work continues and inspires many metalworkers today. I believe that this says much about the lasting quality of the Yellin ethos that this man and his workers established. The study of these materials has led me to have an understanding of the profoundness and excellence of the Yellin wrought iron. Perhaps Yellin's life can best be summed up by a statement he made in a 1931 newspaper article. In the article, he said, "Beauty-that is my primary interest, even if it is only a nail, it must be beautifully designed and executed."
