Highly active, hierarchical zeolite ZSM-5 aggregates have been prepared in a one-step synthesis using alkanolamine as single template. The effects of SiO_2/Al_2O_3, pH and H_2O/Sio_2 on the aggregate morphology of the ZSM-5 nanocrystals were investigated. The obtained aggregate zeolites characterized by SEM, TEM and BET possessed significant textual porosity (up to 0.22 cm~3/g), which could be tuned by the number of substituents in the alkanolamine molecules and the amount of aluminum in the synthetic mixtures. These zeolite aggregates showed high activities for Friedel-Crafts alkylations and may curtail the filtration difficulties during the synthesis and applications to some extent.
