Moorland Farm Walk

On 31st August despite a morning of persistent heavy rain, central region held a visit to the National Trust owned Howden Moor, courtesy of the sporting tenant Mr Geoff Eyre to see the extensive heather regeneration project undertaken by him. Howden moor was designated an Environmentally Sensitive Area in the late 1980s in an attempt to halt the decline in heather, and has since become a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a Special Protection Area. It had a problem with large areas of species poor white moor, consisting primarily of Purple Moor Grass (Molinia caerulea) which had overtaken many of the heather areas.
