Environmental Stewardship: A brief overview of the three new elements

The much anticipated Environmental Stewardship (ES) scheme was launched by Margaret Beckett, (Secretary of State for the environment), to an enthusiastic reception. ES is the Government's response to the recommendation for a new national method of environmental management contained within Sir Donald Curry's report 'Farming and Food: a sustainable future.' This new agri-environmental scheme represents an important change in how the English countryside will be managed for the future. It offers payments for all farmers to deliver beneficial environmental management across England, including the many sheep farmers that occupy large areas of pasture and moorland.
