The third biennial Anti-Ageing SkinCare Conference took place at the Royal College of Physicians in London on 12 and 13 June. The areas of genetics and the environment were key themes and the conference began with a session chaired by Skinnovation's Dr Jack Ferguson, looking at the nature of skin ageing, genetics and the physiology of skin.Dr Daniel Glass, clinical research fellow in the Department of Genetics and Molecular Medicine at King's College London explained in his keynote presentation Gene expression and skin ageing how genes respond to changes in biological signals to produce proteins. He said that as we age gene expression in over 2,000 genes change, over 200 of which affect the skin. Some produce more protein (upregulated) and some produce less (downregulated). Both changes can be a problem for skin.
