In late 1996, Western Mining of Australia planned a major production increase at its underground copper/uranium mine, Olympic Dam. The large increase necessitated a complete new shaft and high-capacity hoisting system. With help from SIEMAG, the new production shaft hoisting system was designed, manufactured, installed and commissioned in the record time of only two years. SIEMAG worked hand-in-hand with the customer and shaft-sinkers to assure timely delivery of the system.The new system produces 10.2 million tons (9.27 million metric tons) per year from 2800 feet (850 meters) deep. It features the modern hoisting technology available including a 4-rope, 5-meter diameter, 6500-kW SIEMAG integrated motor Koepe hoist. Other improvements and safety features include headframe-tension guide ropes with continuous monitoring, multi-channel closed-loop brake control circuits, and mechanical arrestor devices for overtravel protection.
