Casting alloy properties in gravity die casting of thin aluminium components

In regard to the thin walls attainable with gravity die casting, the quality-relevant properties of flow capability and die filling capability were examined for the alloys AlSi7Mg0.3 and AlSi7MgSr frequently used in automotive engineering, as a function of the process parameters "gravity die temperature" and "pouring temperature", using a spiral die and a special ball die. This article provides the physical model approach according to which these casting alloy properties were calculated on the basis of the relevant influencing parameters, thus allowing to compare different alloys as regards their flow properties. A so-called "pouring index" was defined as a universalized quantitative assessment criterion. A close correlation could be established with the well-known rheological parameters Reynolds' number and Weber number.
