Tobey Yu Talks About His Remarkable 40 Years in Engineering and Industry to David Skillings

Since completing a long career as a brilliant student, outstanding engineer and successful businessman several years ago, Dr. A. Tobey Yu has been spending the bulk of his retirement years in Florida. In Nov. 1972, the pinnacle of his remarkable 40-year career was reached with organization of the bulk materials handling firm of ORB A Corp., which grew from the original 3 founders to a staff of 250 professionals in only three years. Today ORB A is owned by Litwin Engineers & Constructors Inc., a wholly-owned Houston-based unit of United Dominion Industries, with headquarters in Charlotte. In 1974, ORB A won a 45 million dollars contract against some of the world's prestigious engineering firms, such as Dravo Corp. and McDowell-Wellman Engineering Co., to design, build, operate and own the Superior Midwest Energy Terminal in Superior, Wis., which was completed on time in 1976 and won numerous unprecedented awards for excellence. In the current year of 1995, western low sulfur coal transshipments at this facility are estimated to reach an all-time high of more than 14 million net tons.
