Pressure die casting dies are subject to heavy mechanical and, in particular, thermal cyclical stressing while in operational service. Although the dies are, as a rule, manufactured from high-grade hot work tool steels, the formation and propagation of thermal fatigue cracks - also known as fire cracks or heat checks - at the cavity wall, remains a problem.
