John Wing and the perils of nosolatry.

In the span of a year, three great psychiatric thinkers died: Lee Robins [1], Leon Eisenberg [2], and, most recently, John Wing [3]. Wing was a founding editor of this journal (Social Psychiatry as it was then). In this article, I review aspects of his thinking that remain highly relevant to the practice of psychiatry and to psychiatric research.Wing was, for many years, the director of the Medical Research Council's Social Psychiatry Unit in London's Institute of Psychiatry, retiring in 1989.1 worked under his directorship since 1977. During his time there, he carried out classic studies in social psychiatric research and mental health services research [4-7].
