NEW JERSEY'S ROLE IN COMMUNITY FORESTRY

While native Americans have been in what is now New Jersey since at least 9500 BC, the first European explorers did not arrive until the early 1500's, some 11,000 years later. 'The first colonies were established by the early 1600's and the land fromthe Delaware River to the Hudson River was named New Jersey in the late 1600's. By the early 1700's we had our first governor and New Jersey declared herself an independent state in 1776. By the end of that century, Alexander Hamilton had established Paterson as the nation's first planned industrial city near the famous 77-foot Great Falls. The 1860's brought the Civil War and the births of two of New Jersey's most renowned foresters - John Gifford and Gifford Pinchot. This was also the time of many ofthe works of Frederick Law Olmstead - Central Park in New York City, for example. Americans established the world's first National Park at Yellowstone in the 1870's, the first gypsy moths escaped into the woods of Massachusetts, and the first Arbor Day was celebrated in Nebraska. The idea of celebrating Arbor Day spread across the nation in less than a decade and by the end of the 1880's Thomas Edison had completed the world's first phonograph, light bulb, and motion picture here before going on to establish the world's most advanced industrial center in the growing city of East Orange.
