As we all know the need to control liquid metal movement has been the subject of technical curiosity and ingenuity since it was first realised that metals could be liquefied for forming by the application of heat. An added ability to counteract the effects of high temperature heat, an ever present associate of liquid metal, has in itself created a need for technological problem solving and this continues with ongoing success in our present age. History shows, however, that progress in one discipline has generally resulted in an improvement elsewhere and in this respect the activity of pumping liquid metal has been shown to follow this trend. The concept of applying the principles of hydraulics to liquid metal movement has been closely linked to the development of materials and engineered systems for controlling high temperature heat and its effects on performance.
