According to the new EU emission standards which will impose more stringent limits from 2008 onward, cars will not be allowed a CO{sub}2 output higher than 140 g/km. With the trend being towards larger cars containing more, safety and luxury features, their weight will continue to increase. The extra weight will lead to higher fuel consumption, meaning there will have to be more intense efforts to meet the tighter CO{sub}2 limits. Several routes are being taken in this respect: - Improvement of combustion efficiency ("engine-internal measures"); - Reduction of power train losses; - Aerodynamic finishing, and weight optimisation by using lighter materials.
